The eighth Irvine Club Lunch was held at the Peninsula Room at Central Pier on 28 March 2008 followed with drinks close by at the Atlantic Bar. Once again the club achieved well over 300 guests and sold out within four weeks of releasing the invitation. This is a strong endorsement of what the Irvine Club is all about, mates getting together with mates, chatting about sport and supporting relevant charities where we can make a real difference. I thank all those who attended for their continuing support of the Club.
Once again our speakers delivered excellent entertainment. As our key note speaker, Damien Fleming entertained us with his stories and insights into the Australian cricket team. His delivery and step by step detail of his hat trick on test debut, a feet which at present is yet to be matched, or winning the World Cup in 1999, were among the most entertaining and showed why Damien has been successful at forging a career in broadcasting both on radio and television. Damien was well supported on the day by our MC Tony Lenard who entertained the crowd with his witty comments throughout the day.
The importance of the Irvine Club’s charitable focus continued at Irvine VIII through the support of the Lets Beat Bowel Cancel Foundation, a charity established to raise awareness of bowel cancer throughout the community and prevent the disease. Professor Adrian Polglase delivered a powerful message on the day. Once again the day was a success in raising funds to promote awareness.
The club also welcomed two new members: Cameron Gray and Martin Ross. Despite their Scottish heritage and lack of knowledge of AFL, their contribution to the club has already been felt. The committee will continue to look to invite new members to the club each year and we are hoping to announce some exciting developments at our next lunch in November.
On behalf of the Irvine Club committee I would like to pass on our thanks to each of you who attended and for your continuing support of the club, as it’s this ongoing support and attendance which makes the Irvine Club a great success.
I would like to acknowledge the Irvine Club Committee for their continuing efforts in arranging the events and also for those who assist in delivering each lunch including the support of the auction item donors.
I look forward to seeing you all again for our next lunch in November 2008.
